Instructions

  1. Cleaning
Rinse the coffee collection tray of your coffee maker daily with boiling water. If you start collecting coffee grounds (when the daily amount is not enough), clean a container with a tight-fitting lid with boiling water or alcohol. Store the coffee in the fridge (max 2 days). Clean your growing bucket with boiling water or alcohol. Remember to always clean everything you use with boiling water or alcohol first. Also wash your hands thoroughly every time you get started.
  2. Adding coffee
Collect 100-150 grams of coffee grounds. If it is very dry, add a little water (see tips). Mix the coffee grounds with the spawn in your (rinsed) growing bucket, with clean hands or spoon. Put your bucket in a dark place. When the coffee grounds turn white (hello mycelium!), add another layer of coffee (max 1cm), until the bucket is full.
  3. Mushroom fruiting
When the bucket is full, put it in a light and cool place (not in the sun). When the mushrooms start coming out, spray 2x daily with water (more often if it is warm). Leave the tape on the holes, the mushrooms will push themselves through.
  4. Harvesting
Once the mushrooms stop growing (within a few days already!), harvest them by twisting them off at the base by hand. Bon appetit! There may be a second harvest, so keep spraying water. Spray in your bucket if it is very dry.
  5. Again
You can keep growing again and again. Restart by discarding 80% of the contents (wonderful compost!) and use the remaining most new 20% to restart:
    • Keep 20% of the youngest mycelium from your bucket in the fridge (unless you already have enough coffee grounds, of course).
    • Collect about as much coffee grounds as mycelium.
    • Remove the tape from your bucket and clean the bucket with boiling water or alcohol. Stick new breathable tape over the holes (e.g. Leukopor).
    • Mix the mycelium and coffee grounds in the bucket. Follow the same instructions as the first time.

Tips

  • White and fluffy fungi threads?
Good, that’s how it should be!
  • Green/orange/any other colour moulds?
Remove them with a clean spoon. With green moulds, your coffee is possibly too dry, in which case spray some water.
  • What is too wet or dry?
The coffee grounds should be the colour of dark chocolate. It falls off your spoon, but a little remains on the spoon.
  • Espresso?
Crumble the hard pieces and if dry, spray with water.
  • Layer of moisture?
    Drain it out well.
  • Bucket full and coffee all white, but no mushrooms fruiting?
It can take a week or more, so be patient. If nothing comes after a while, put the container in a really cool place for a few days or a day in the fridge.
  • Nothing works or trouble restarting?
Start again with fresh spawn, available with us (€5). Email info@fungifarmers.nl.
